Working groups on cutting-edge technologies

MIRRI continuously endeavours to level up its infrastructure, equipment and services with the highest standards. Thematic working groups composed by internal and external experts/scientists have been set up, dedicated to cutting-edge technologies/solutions with application in the microbiology domain, namely whole genome sequencing (WGS), microbiota preservation, and MALDI-TOF MS analysis. The shared aim of these working groups is to contribute to the definition of MIRRI’s strategy for the acquisition, efficient exploitation, and development of the opportunities that these new technologies/solutions offer to MIRRI, to its partner organisations and, most importantly, to its users.

High-quality genomic characterisation of microbial resources is essencial for the understanding of microorganisms and their exploitation in the domains of biotechnology, agro-food, environment, and health.The main objective of this working group is to discuss about and contribute to MIRRI’s strategy for the genomic characterisation of its microbial resources. This implies setting objectives, and accordingly discuss about the type of data, tools, and methods for analysis.

The importance of taking into  account microbiomes (and not isolated strains only) has been highlighted, over the last decades, by multiple studies in several scientific and application fields. However, exploring, preserving and exploiting microbiota remains a challenge for culture collections. The aim of this working group is to reflect and recommend on the way MIRRI should continuously strengthen its role in the era of microbiomes. The experts would suggest a way to act together in facing the challenges related to the preservation, characterisation and distribution of consortia and microbiota samples. It would be of high importance to identify new potential partners and microbiome experts who could collaborate with or join the MIRRI community.

MALDI-TOF MS is a high-throughput technology which is used for the cost-effective, rapid and reliable identification of microorganisms. In order to render the analysis and results complementary and interoperable, it is of the highest importance to define common standards for MALDI-TOF MS analysis. The aim of this working group is to discuss standardisation of MALDI-TOF MS procedures, sharing data and organising a common reference database for the MIRRI community and beyond.
